Rattlesnake Rodeo goes back to Friday, Saturday

The Newsboys are among the Christian vocalists who will perform in Opp next Sunday.

The Newsboys were the headline act for the contemporary Christian portion of the Rattlesnake Rodeo. This year, the Christian music moves to Saturday night.

The 56th annual Rattlesnake Rodeo will feature a new format.

Opp Mayor John Bartholomew said that churches had requested that the Christian concert move to Saturday night rather than be held on Sunday.

“So, we’re going to have the country music act on Friday night and the Christian Concert on Saturday night,” he said.

This year, the rodeo was held on Saturday and Sunday with the country concert being held on Saturday and the Christian concert held on Sunday.

Pouring rains didn’t dampen the spirits of the crowd who came for the Sunday rodeo.

It was a packed house at Channell-Lee Stadium for contemporary artists Finding Favour, John Tibbs, Audio Adrenaline and headliner Newsboys.

Gary Allan headlined the country show.

The city council Monday night budgeted $178,900 for the rodeo.

Highlights include:

• $35,000 for materials and supplies;

• $1,500 for travel expense;

• $9,400 for workers’ compensation;

• $125,000 for entertainment expenses;

• $6,500 for advertising;

• $1,500 for snake meat.

The event is set for April 1 and April 2, 2016, at Channell-Lee Stadium, and officials will begin securing the acts for the show soon.
