JOHNNY WAYNE POWELL

Johnny Wayne Powell, 43, of Andalusia, inherited his new cancer-free body in Heaven at 10:45 p.m. on Sun., Dec. 25, 2011.

A celebration of his arrival in heaven will be held at Carolina Baptist Church at 11 a.m., today, Wed., Dec. 28. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Assisting with the services will be Dr. Matt Brady and the Rev. Paul Little, as well as a special pre-recorded message from Johnny that he requested be shared at his celebration. Special music will be presented by Lori Fuqua, Gary Padgett, Rhonda Hardy and Hubble Sowards. Pallbearers will be Gary Alexander, John Colvin, Jerry Davis, Chris Greathouse, Craig Nichols and Dennis O’Neal. Honorary pallbearer will be Todd Killough.

Born on Aug. 30, 1968, Johnny attended Straughn School, graduating in 1986. He earned a design and drafting degree from MacArthur State Technical College in Opp. Raised on a ranch/farm, he decided to return to a life working with cows and row cropping with both his father and father-in-law.

Johnny is survived by his wife of 23 years, Kristi Godwin Powell of Andalusia; son and daughter-in-law, Jared and Hannah Powell of Opp; and son, Kaleb Powell, of Andalusia. Other family members include his parents, Harold and Eva Nell Powell; brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Leigh Powell, sister and brother-in-law, Teresa and David Morris; brother, Donny Powell; maternal grandmother, Eva Rae Norris; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bill and Judy Godwin; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Steve and Debbie Godwin, and John and Gabrielle Baldwin; maternal grandmother-in-law, Johnnye Vise; four nephews, Garrett Powell, Ethan Powell, Joshua Godwin and Hunter Baldwin; seven nieces, Haydn Powell, Chelsea Powell, Erin Morris, Katie Morris, Taylor Godwin, Cassidy Godwin and River Baldwin; close friends, Gary and Cathy Alexander, and their children, Mitchell Alexander and Edie Alexander, all of Andalusia; as well as a large extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Johnny’s family would like to express their sincere appreciation to all who have ministered to their family with love, visits and prayers. They would also like to thank the doctors and nurses for their attentive care and treatment of Johnny since his cancer diagnosis in December of 2010 as well as a special thank you to his hospice nurse, Donna Godwin, for making Johnny’s last days comfortable while treating him with dignity and respect.

Johnny’s love of the Lord was evident in his support of the Gideons International organization which prints and distributes God’s Word. He also served his Lord by participating in church mission trips. To continue his desire of reaching others for the Lord, Johnny asked that donations be made to Gideons Living Memorial Bible plan or to the mission trip fund at Carolina Baptist Church so that others may serve in his place.

GLINDA ELMORE ROBBINS BEASLEY

Glinda Elmore Robbins Beasley, 65, of Andalusia, died Sun., Dec. 25, 2011, at her residence.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., today, Wed., Dec. 28, at the Judson Baptist Church with the Rev. Randall Bradley, the Rev. Hank Roberts and the Rev. Merrill Davis officiating, with interment in Judson Cemetery. Visitation will held at the church 30 minutes prior to services.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Beasley of Andalusia; her son Christopher Robbins, of Oxford; her grandchildren, Ryley Robbins and Kendal Robbins; her brother and sisters-in-law, Wayne and Margie Elmore, Jacob Elmore, Willie Ray and Judy Elmore and Harold and Ferrolyn Elmore; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Faye and Glen Sightler, Barbara and Don Bradley, Gloria and Eddie Cannon, Charlotte and Gary Smith and Elaine and Gordon Bulger; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Heath Bulger, Clay Elmore, Gary Bradley, Zachary Roberts, Isaac Bradley and Danny Vines.

Honorary pallbearers will be her nephews and grandnephews.

IRENE ‘KING’ SMELLEY

Irene “King” Smelley, 89, of Decatur, passed away on Mon., Dec. 26, at Morningside Assisted Living.

Graveside services will be held today, Wed., Dec. 28, at 11 a.m. in Burningtree Memorial Gardens with Gorden Smith officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. Burial will following Burningtree Memorial Gardens.

She was born on Thurs., Jan. 12, 1022, in Covington County, to James Albert King and Arbie Faulk King. She was a member of Point Mallard Parkway Baptist Church.

Survivors include Pat (Gordon) Smith of Decatur; one sister, Bonnie Merle Harrison, Lithia Springs, Ga.; grandchild, Stacia Cantrell (Kelly) Barcal of Priceville; and three great-grandchildren, Morgan Cantrell, Amber Barcal and Hanna Barcal.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Fred Smelley; her sisters and their husbands, Berttie Williamson and husband, Wright, Lula Mae Blackmon and husband, Willie J., Jean Payton and husband, John, and Erline Livings and her husband, Willie; one grandson, Patrick G. Smith; and one granddaughter, Shannon Smith.

The family would like to say a special thank you to The Terrace, Morningside Assisted Living, Hospice of the Valley, Dr. Tim Weirich, all her recent caregivers and the nurses of Decatur General Hospital for all the compassionate and loving care given.

The family asks that memorials be made to Hospice of the Valley.
