SHS girls finish 3rd at tourney

Straughn’s girls team beat Highland Home 73-28 Friday to finish in third place at Red Level’s 14th annual invitational Christmas basketball tournament.
The Lady Tigers were led by Brittany Driver, who had 22 points. Mariah Bonham had 11 points off the bench, and Anjelica Bonham had nine points.
SHS led 21-8 after the first period, and outscored the Lady Squadron 15-7 in the second to lead 36-15 at half time.
Driver hit a put back to put her team ahead 38-15 early in the third period, and Paige Taylor added the front-end of a pair of free throws and a jumper to give the Lady Tigers a 44-18 advantage.
SHS held a 52-20 lead on a Katelyn Kinsaul drive and easy lay up on transition.
With 2:45 left in the third period, SHS girls coach Scott Kinsaul sent in his second-string players.
They added give points to help the Lady Tigers take a 59-24 lead going into the fourth period.
Leading 61-28, Kinsaul added a basket on a steal and Janelle Nurse had a 3-pointer to give SHS a 66-28 lead with four minutes left in the fourth period.
The Lady Tigers’ next game will be against rival Andalusia on Jan. 3 to start area play.
