A full house greeted the Greenville City Council Monday night for its regularly scheduled meeting and one of the top items of discussion was controlling the beaver population.

The Council awarded the bid for beaver control to Nuisance Animal Control, owned by Russell Burkett.

They agreed to pay Burkett $15,000.

Councilman Tommy Ryan asked if the city had a severe enough beaver problem to warrant such an expense and Mayor Dexter McLendon assured him there was a problem.

Public Works Director Milton Luckie said the problem is that the beaver dams up creeks and springs and that leads to problems.

&uot;When they dam up the creeks and springs, it backs up into the city’s sewer system and to the water treatment plant,&uot; he told the Council.

McLendon did say he chose to go with the one-year contract rather than a three-year contract.

Gasoline was also a cost discussed at the meeting when the Council awarded the bid for gasoline to Middeton Oil Company.

The company will provide gasoline to the city through an automated fueling station on Ala. Highway 31.

The cost to the city is much less than what citizens are paying.

The bid to provide mid-grade unleaded gasoline with an 89 Octane rating for $1.70 a gallon.

On-road diesel fuel will cost $1.69 and the off-road diesel will cost $1.66.

The third bid of the evening awarded was for concrete.

Regular 3,000 concrete mix was awarded to Stephens Concrete for $68 per cubic yard.

Also regular 3,000 concrete mix with fiber mesh was also given to Stephens Concrete for $71 per cubic yard.

The bids for curb mix concrete and curb mix concrete with fiber mesh was awarded to Couch Ready Mix USA for $79 per cubic yard and $83 per cubic yard.

The city’s athletic program need for t-shirts

were awarded to McLendon Athletic Center for $3.90 each for youth sizes.

The adult sizes will cost the city $4.25.

It should be noted that McLendon Athletic Center is in no way connected with Mayor McLendon.

In other business the Council took the following action:

N named Bertha Mae Yelder to the South Central Alabama Mental Health Board.

N Approved payment to GT Distributors for $1,792 for police equipment.

N Approved payment to Sam’s Club for purchase of 10 picnic tables for the ballparks and seven utility tables for Dunbar for $1,816.86.

N Approved a $1,209.56 payment for annual maintenance, repairs and certification of 13 MSA breathing apparatus units.

The mayor also recognized Sen. Russ Feingold and his wife, Mary, and the media traveling with the Wisconsin senator.

The next meeting of the Council will be at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, April 11.
