The Greenville YMCA kicked off its capitol fundraising campaign on Monday when SuperFoods grocery store manager Phillip Graham presented Greenville YMCA executive director Amanda Phillips a check for $500.

The money was raised from groceries bought at SuperFoods on April 16 during Community Building Day. A person buying groceries that day who had a Greenville YMCA coupon had 5 percent of his or her grocery bill donated to the Greenville YMCA.

About 1,000 coupons were distributed throughout Butler County, according to Greenville YMCA chairman of the board of managers Allen Stephenson.

"SuperFoods and the John Wilson family have always been supportive of the community, especially the youth," Stephenson said. "This is just another generous act by the family."

The capitol campaign will generate funds to help pay for the remodeling and transformation of the former Greenville Academy into the YMCA's new location.

Stephenson said that $650,000 is left to be collected to pay for the building's purchase, purchase of the land and remodeling.

"This is just one way we help and give back to the community," SuperFoods owner John Wilson told the Advocate in an earlier edition. "The YMCA is a great organization and we ware pleased to be involved with this activity."

The Greenville YMCA had to move from its Beeland Park building because it was bursting at the seams.

Stephenson said that participation was not what he expected because of other events going on in the tri-county area. But he said he hoped that the YMCA and SuperFoods would entertain the idea of another special coupon day.
