Kayla McClain, a junior at Andalusia High School, and her sister, Mary-Ella like to go fast — legally.
McClain has race in the NHRA Junior Dragsters for eight years, and she has 49 victories with 30 second-place wins.
To be able to compete in the NHRA, she requested to attend Frank Hawley’s Drag Race School in Gainesville, Fla.
McClain’s family granted her request, and she attended the school in December of last year to secure her NHRA Super Comp License.
Many hours of class time were required by Hawley before allowing McClain and her other 13 classmates to be in the dragster with a 572 cubic inch motor.
Each run is recorded and then more hours of class time.
McClain made the fastest pass of the class with a quarter mile time of 8.14 seconds at 170 miles per hour, granting she and two other classmates the NHRA Super Comp License.
With Hawley’s guidance, McClain also secured her NHRA Super Gas License.
McClain plans to enjoy her last season in the NHRA Junior Dragsters with her sister, Mary-Ella, who is a former NHRA Junior Dragster World Champion.
McClain is the daughter of Kevin and Angie McClain of Andalusia.
