­­The Opp City Council is once again tackling cleanup issues in the city.

At Monday night’s work session, the council discussed the need for a better limb pick-up system.

“I see a lot of limbs around town, and I know we have a truck running,” said District 5 Coun-cilman Oren Stewart. “It makes the area look trashy.”

District 3 Councilman Mickey Crew said he had seen city employees picking up limbs periodically.

“I don’t like the way they do it,” Mayor H.D. Edgar said. “You see them riding up and down the road not doing anything. It definitely needs improving.”

District 1 Councilman Scotty Short agreed.

“I’ve seen them on route, and they’d miss a house,” he said.

The mayor reminded them sometimes city employees need to discard the limbs they’ve picked up.

“But I’ve also seen them run to the dump with half a load,” he said. “They ride down Maloy Street (many) times a month, and they could pick-up the limbs. The truck rides twice as much, not working, as it does working. This is one of the most expensive, non-productive ways of doing things.”

The mayor said he’s been talking to the street department about making changes.

The council tossed around the idea of having a call-in system, where residents could call city hall and have their limbs picked up the next day.

“Can we schedule where they’ve been and where they’re going?” District 2 Councilman Jimmy Rogers asked.

City Clerk Connie Smith said there definitely needed to be better records.

It was suggested that Smith write up work orders for picking up the limbs, but she said she essentially does this already.

The council took no action on the situation, but will continue to mull over ideas to help fix the issue in the coming weeks.
