City Inspector Eddie Anderson reported on the progress of several projects during the Greenville Planning Commission's monthly meeting on Monday night.

Anderson said renovations to the old Wal-Mart building, located at Interstate Plaza and future home of Marvin's Building Materials and Home Centers, are nearing completion. He said Marvin's anticipates an opening date of March 1.

&#8220They're actually in the process of stocking the store right now,” he said.

The Leeds-based company has grown from a single hardware store, opened by Marvin Cohn in 1945, to a chain of 25 stores in Alabama, Mississippi and Florida. The old Wal-Mart building has undergone an estimated $550,000 in renovations that was funded by Mike Dendy, an electrical contractor and retail developer who has worked with Marvin's in the past to locate stores in Atmore, Brewton and Jasper.

Near the Wal-Mart SuperCenter, Anderson said construction on Greenville's newest strip mall, Willow Pointe, has been hindered by rain in the last few weeks. Developers originally planned to have 70 to 75 percent of the stores in the new mall open by January.

&#8220They're only about 10 percent complete on the project,” he said.”

The 17,300 square-foot building will be the new home to Top Nails & Tan, Check-into-Cash, Cato's, Old Mexico Restaurant, and Shoe Show.

Construction is also underway on Savannah Ridge Apartments, said Anderson,

located on S. Conecuh St. The new apartment complex will feature 33 housing units.
