Fort Dale's baseball team dropped to 1-2 in the area this week, but rebounded with a doubleheader sweep of Sparta Academy on Thursday.

The Eagles (5-6) lost for the second time this season to Morgan Academy, 12-1, on Tuesday and then scored 29 combined runs to sweep Sparta in Evergreen.

&#8220Right now we need some leaders to step forward and step it up for us,” Fort Dale coach Clint Lowery said. &#8220We also need to try to get some mental toughness on this team, because not everything is going to go our way.”

The Eagles scattered 10 hits in Game 1 of Thursday's 10-6 victory over a winless Sparta team. The game saw three lead changes with the game knotted in the fourth inning before Fort Dale scored a run in the fifth to take the lead for good.

Davis Watts got the Eagles offense rolling in the first inning with a two-run home run.

&#8220(The pitcher's) curveball just hung up there, and I hit it,” Watts explained.

Brady Newton was one of four Fort Dale players to finish with multiple hits. Newton was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Casey Weston also was 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI, and Will Bowman was 2-for-4 with a RBI.

Andrew Phelps, who improved to 1-1 on the mound for the Eagles, helped his own cause at the plate with two hits.

Phelps worked 5 2/3 innings giving up five hits, four walks and two earned runs, while striking out four.

Phelps carried a hot bat into Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader with a double and a two-run home run in the second inning to key the Eagles' 19-8 victory.

Fort Dale scattered 11 hits in the game with four players finishing the game with multiple hits.

Weston was 2-for-3 with a RBI, while Watts was 2-for-2 with a RBI. Kendall Gibson also was 2-for-2.

After Sparta knotted the game at 2 in the bottom of the first inning, Fort Dale scored seven runs - all with two out — in the second and then six more in the third to put the game out of the Warriors' reach.

Caleb Blackburn was the winning pitcher for the Eagles after 3 2/3 innings of work. He allowed four hits, three earned runs and two walks, while striking out four.

Fort Dale's bats didn't have the pop that they did against Sparta on Tuesday in an area game with Morgan Academy.

The Eagles managed just three hits in a 12-1 loss to the Senators.

Weston took the loss on the mound after four innings of work. Weston gave up five hits, five earned runs and two walks, while striking out 10.

Adam Vickery scored the only run in the game for Fort Dale in the third inning. He reached on a single and then stole second base. He advanced to third on an error and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Eagles now take a week off for Spring Break before returning to action.

The break comes at a good time, according to Lowery.

&#8220They need some time off,” Lowery said of his team. &#8220We don't have much depth at pitcher, and our fielding is sketchy, but at least we don't have anyone the (disabled list).”
