Lucy Summerlin, counselor at Luverne Elementary School, recently received the Class Act Award sponsored by WSFA.
Colleague Robert Brown nominated Summerlin.
“She is always willing to help our younger generation,” Brown said. “She really helps them by teaching them to make their own decisions. And, she has been a real blessing to me since the first day I met her.”
Summerlin has served Luverne Elementary since 1968 as either a school counselor or as a classroom teacher. She is the sponsor of the Luverne Elementary Peer Club, and she is a member of the Crenshaw County Education Association, the Alabama Education Association and the National Education Association. She is also a member of the Dee Turner Parent Teacher Association and the Alabama Counseling Association as well.
Summerlin is fondly referred to as “Miss Lucy” by her peers and her students at Luverne School.
“Miss Lucy has been dedicated to the education of our children for 48 years,” Tiffany Jones, Luverne School second grade teacher, said. “She truly cares about our children.”
One of Summerlin's former students and present colleague echoed Jones' sentiments.
“Miss Lucy is kind, caring and dedicated to the children of our school,” Shannon Motes, second grade teacher, said. “She is a true Luverne supporter.”
Summerlin is a member of Southside Church of Christ in Montgomery where she is the co-teacher of the young adult Sunday School class. She is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and serves as Chair Archivist for this organization. Furthermore, Summerlin serves as president of the Helicon High School Reunion, as National Secretary for the Crenshaw County Family Reunion, and she is a member of the M. L. Baker Number One Order of Eastern Star.
She has one daughter, Wondy Weston, who is also an educator. Weston is married to Bernard Weston, Jr., and they have one daughter, Jade, who is eight. The family lives in Houston, Texas.
“Luverne School is very proud of Miss Lucy because of her willingness to make a difference in the lives of the children,” Brown said.
