LUVERNE — With the regular season just one week away, the Andalusia Bulldogs traveled to Luverne Friday night to face the Luverne Tigers in preseason action that saw the Tigers and the Bulldogs fight to a 20-20 tie.

The night started off strong for the Bulldogs when Cameron Wood intercepted a pass from Tigers quarterback Tige Townsend on just the third play of the game.

The Bulldog offense, led by senior quarterback C.P. Rogers, wasted no time in driving the ball down the field and capped off a five-play drive with Rogers scoring from 5 yards out. The extra point was no good leaving the score at 6-0 with more than eight minutes left in the first quarter.

Both the Tigers and the Bulldogs defense forced punts on the next three possessions before the Luverne scored with a little trickery.

The Tigers first drive of the second quarter was the only time the Andalusia varsity defense allowed a score, and it took a halfback pass for it to happen. With just over six minutes to play in the third, Townsend took the snap and tossed it to running back Tyler Best who then launched a pass to a wide open Kevin Womack for a 50-yarder.

The Bulldogs used up most of the remaining six minutes left in the first half on a 12-play, 65-yard drive that was finished off with sophomore quarterback Michael McCalman finding Ethan Jones on a five-yard touchdown pass, and after the extra point, the Bulldogs held a 13-6 lead with just 13 seconds left in the first half.

The Tigers drove down to the three yard line on their next possession before the Bulldog defense stepped up forcing a fumble and recovering it on the five yard line.

The fourth quarter saw both teams JV squads fight it out to the finish.

The Tigers JV was the first to score and they needed only one play to do it as sophomore Marcel McMillan raced 82 yards for a touchdown. The score was even at 13 after the extra point.

The Bulldogs next possession took only five plays with freshman Derrick Dorsey

rushing three times on the drive for 20 and eight yards before capping the drive on a 25-yard touchdown run that put the Bulldogs up 20-13.

The lead didn’t last long though as the Tigers used only three plays before Kenterius Womack hit Uriah Brown for a 70-yard touchdown pass and with another successful PAT the Tigers once again tied the game and that’s how it would end with the score 20-20.

Andalusia head coach Brian Seymore said he thought both sides of the ball executed well and both quarterbacks played very well but he also said the team has a lot more work to be done but said he believes that his team will be ready for their first real game next week against Class 5A Carroll-Ozark at home.
