Wrapping up the first week of spring practice, the Greenville High Tigers scrimmaged Friday night for about two hours and head coach Bryant Vincent said he was encouraged with what he saw during the week.
“It seems like we've gotten better everyday, with the exception of a little mental setback Thursday,” Vincent said. “The intensity and the attitude towards just playing football has been great.”
“These kids enjoy just playing the game,” he added.
Defensively Vincent said he has a strong group that is working hard to get better everyday with defensive coordinator Ernest Young.
“Our defense is getting to the football and swarming to the football,” Vincent said.
On the offensive side, Vincent said he hasn't seen as much progress as he has on the defensive side of the ball, but he added the guys are learning and doing what it takes to get the system down.
“It takes 11 guys to execute a play and it's been hit or miss for us, as a whole, all week,” Vincent said of the offense.
Some offensive players who have stepped up this week have been wide receivers Traves Yelder and Michael Peagler and Tremaine Brewer, Josh Longmire and Marcus Mickles on the defensive side.
“They have stepped up and had a good week,” Vincent said.
On special teams, newcomer Stewart Moody has been practicing as a place-kicker in hopes of alleviating kicking duties from starting quarterback Casey Weston, who handled all the placekicking and most of the punting last season.
“Stewart Moody has been a pleasant surprise,” Vincent said.
Although Vincent is excited about this year's team and the up-coming season, he said this Tiger team is lacking s few things that made last year's group so special.
“The main two differences between last year's team and this year has been leadership and discipline,” Vincent said. “We lost a lot of leadership and we have to stay on top of discipline.”
The Tigers will take the weekend off and return to practice Monday at 4 p.m. Greenville will scrimmage again Friday and wrap up spring practice May 18 at Highland Home.
