Covington County’s 16-to-18-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars fell to Etowah County 3-1 in an elimination game Sunday at Andalusia High School to get knocked out of the state tournament.

Covington County coach Eddie Stacey said it was a good effort defensively on the weekend.

“It was two good pitched ball games,” Stacey said. “We just didn’t hit the ball. Zack Stinson and Andrew Burleson pitched two good ball games.”

Covington County started the tournament with an 11-1 win over Wetumpka last Friday night.

From there, the host team would go on to lose to Tallassee 2 on Saturday 4-2 to drop down to the loser’s bracket.

Etowah County 3, Covington County 1

Etowah County’s Chase Jakiel got the scoring going in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Nate Pollard.

Etowah County added two runs in the fifth inning on an RBI single from John Hill that scored Hunter Wood, and a sac fly from Justin Langdale that scored Hill.

For Covington County, Stinson scored on a steal at home after stealing second and third. Stinson reached on an error.

Langdale earned the win on the mound for Etowah County. He struck out six, and gave up one run on five hits.

Stinson got the loss, allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out 10.

Tallassee 4, Covington County 2

Tallassee’s Shawn Thomas struck out seven and allowed two runs on six hits to help lead his team to victory.

Covington County held a 2-0 lead going into the sixth inning, but Tallassee plated four runs on two hits to take the lead.

Blaise Coleman, Daryl Woodall, Jonathan Robbins and Jessi Rowlen scored for Tallassee in the sixth.

Covington County scored one run in the third inning on an RBI single from Colter Poole to score Rob Maddox.

The run in the sixth inning came on steal at home from pitch runner Sid Newby.

Burleson struck out one and allowed four runs on six hits in the loss.
