Four Republican statewide candidates stopped in Covington County Wednesday morning as part of the “Hometown Connection” tour. The tour will make 106 stops and visit 67 counties in the state of Alabama in the weeks leading up to Election Day on Tues., Nov. 4.

The candidates who spoke at the Andalusia city square were Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh, candidate for the president of the Public Service Commission; Judge Bill Thompson, candidate for the Court of Civil Appeals; Beth Kellum, candidate for the Court of Criminal Appeals Place 1 and Mary Windom, candidate for the Court of Criminal Appeals Place 2. Greg Shaw, candidate for the Alabama Supreme Court, was unable to attend.

The candidates greeted citizens and made several short speeches about their candidacies and the state of the Republican Party statewide.

“We are trying to connect with all the hometowns that make America great,” Cavanaugh said. “We’ve had a great time walking around the town square and meeting all the merchants.”

Windom also espoused the values of small American towns like Andalusia.

“We don’t appreciate it much when the liberals in Washington and the media put down (vice presidential candidate) Sarah Palin and small towns like Wasilla, Alaska,” she said.
