A 78-year-old Andalusia man was jailed Sunday for bootlegging, said Lt. Lance Price with the Alabama Beverage Control Board.

Price said Marvin Culliver’s Simmons Street neighbors complained to Montgomery about his alleged actions.

“They stated that (Cul-liver) had been bootlegging – selling beer on Sundays – out of his house,” he said. “So, we sent in an undercover agent Sunday who made a purchase from him.”

Price said Culliver’s preferred product was Natural Light beer.

“I think he’s been doing it for years,” Price said of Culliver’s alleged sales. “He’s an elderly gentleman and was doing it, I think, just to supplement his income. It just so happens that side job is illegal.”

Price said Culliver was charged with selling alcohol on Sunday, selling alcohol without a license and possession of alcohol for sale without a license. He was booked into the Covington County Jail and held on a $9,000 bond.

Additionally, a second subject, who was leaving the residence as the undercover agent arrived, was cited for buying alcohol on Sunday, Price said.

“Alabama is a controlled state, and we are tasked with the enforcement of the sale and possession of alcohol beverages throughout this state,” Price said. “Mr. Culliver didn’t have a license, broke the law and had to go to jail. It doesn’t matter if you’re selling alcohol out of a house, out of a store or at a backyard party. You have to have a license.”
