Back to business

After losing their head football coach earlier this week, it’s still “business as usual” for the Pleasant Home Eagles as far as summer work outs are concerned.

For more than two weeks, the Eagles have participated in work outs two days per week to focus on getting stronger and faster for the upcoming fall season.

“We’ve just been working the guys out,” PHS assistant coach Ron Yates said. “(Assistant) Coach (Cody) McCain has been meeting with some of the guys in the mornings and putting them through work outs.”

The Eagles work out twice a day — in the morning and in the evening. They’ll move to a three-day per week schedule in July, where 7-on-7 will be a focus of the team.

Earlier this week, former coach Robert Bradford held a meeting with the football players and told them that he was resigning as the head football coach. On Tuesday, Bradford told The Star-News that he was taking an assistant coaching position at Enterprise High School.

Yates said right now, everything the team is doing is the same as it always has been.

“All of this is contingent on the idea that we don’t know how long it will be before someone new is put into place,” he said. “So, we’re just going to continue status quo in what we’re doing because that’s the best thing for the kids.”

McCain said each player has a set number of work outs he must attend this summer.

“Right now, we’re working around the kids’ schedules,” McCain said. “Some of them are playing baseball, and are working.”

During the morning work outs, the players lift weights and run. In the evenings, the players will do something different each night.

McCain said after he found out Bradford was leaving, he thought the best thing for the coaching staff to do was to keep with their normal routine.

“We’re trying to continue on as if every thing is business as usual,” he said. “We’ve got to keep everything going. If we take time off now to figure out what’s going on, then we’re going to lose that time during the summer. Those are two or three weeks we can’t get back.”

Yates said the main goal this summer for the team is to improve on the one thing the players do well — getting stronger.

“Here at Pleasant Home, what we do is we have big kids that are strong,” Yates said. “We don’t have kids that are naturally fast. What we have to do is we have to work on those things they’re good at, and make them better.

“We’re going to keep working on those things that make us what we are,” he said.

When asked how the work outs have gone so far, Yates said they’ve been pretty good.

“The attendance is going well,” he said. “Considering we just lost our coach, the spirits have been high. The more familiarity and routine we have, the more the kids pick up on it and the more they buy into it.”
