A tip by a private citizen led to the capture of a fugitive bank robber and multiple felon from Macon County Wednesday.

Darrick Calhoun, 41, formerly of Tuskegee, was wanted for a violating the conditions of his parole after he was released from prison on a third-degree robbery charge. However, a call to the Covington County Sheriff’s Office from a private citizen said Calhoun was living in Covington County and had not registered with local law enforcement, as is required by law.

“Sheriff’s personnel was able to make contact with one of Calhoun’s employers and his girlfriend in an effort to advise him to register as a multiple felon with the sheriff’s office,” CCSO investigator Wesley Snodgrass said. “He then quit his job and secured employment at another location. Investigators were able to locate Calhoun and stop him on a traffic stop on the bypass in Andalusia.

“He then gave law enforcement and Drug Task Force agents a false name and identity,” he said. “When he was confronted with his driver’s license and mug shot, he confessed as to his real identity.”

Calhoun now faces additional charges of failure to register as a felon and providing false information to a law enforcement officer.

Currently, Calhoun is being held in the Covington County Jail without bond.
