Opp residents are upset that only the Hardin Street pool is open this summer.

At one time, there were three functioning pools in Opp operated by the city, one on Hardin Street, one behind the First Meth-odist Church and one owned by Opp and Micolas Mills.

Mechanical issues forced the closure of the one behind the church years ago, and officials said it’s too costly to repair.

The same can be said for the mill.

“The mill, they weren’t charging us anything to use it,” Opp Mayor H.D. Edgar said. “They decided they wanted to sell it, and it was a good 50 years old. It’s antiquated and needs a lot of repair. We decided the city didn’t need to invest in that pool.”

Edgar said he didn’t think it was a wise investment since the city already had one pool across town that is condemned.

Local residents voiced their concerns on the popular social media outlet Facebook.

“We had moved away, but we are back and will be at the next city council meeting to plead with the city to get another pool up and running for the kids of Opp,” said Tammy Atkins. “In my opinion, trying to put all the kids of Opp in one pool is crazy, and that is too many to put in one place and the more kids you have in one pool the greater the chances of someone getting hurt.”

One resident questioned why the city would want to build new offices, but not fix a city pool.

“I want to know why the City of Opp let both of our kids’ pools close,” said Marlene Pugh. “The kids really need one of the pools to swim in.”

Linda Sue Roberts agreed.

“Amen to that,” she said. “Nothing for our kids to do here. This is so sad that this town has completely forgot(ten) about our kids.”

Shana Anderson said the city has put a lot of money in sidewalk restoration, and now it is time to invest in the children.

Edgar said a new pool would cost more than $100,000.

However, he did say the city does have long-range plans to bring more water activities to Opp.

Edgar said the city has plans to build a splash park at the old city pool, but said they don’t have the money to do so at the present time.

In the mean time, Edgar reminded residents that the pool is open to all.

“The Hardin Street pool is well-maintained,” he said. “It’s the city pool, and it’s for everyone.”

Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until noon and from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
