In the 13th chapter of John’s gospel, Jesus says that it is our love for one another that will show the world that we are his disciples. Glen took these words as a personal call on his daily life and treated each day as an opportunity to love and care for others. The many ways in which he ministered to people is unable to be measured in words, but is strongly felt by all who knew him. His life was a testament to others of the goodness of God.

Glen was a loving husband, father, and D-Daddy to his family; a constant encouragement and helper to his friends; and a trusted leader in both his church and his community. His life is the story of a man who never forgot who he was or where he came from, but more than that, his life is a story of relationships. Living out Jesus’s commandment to love one another was his constant blueprint, no matter where life took him on any given day.

Glen was devoted to his family. He treasured his wife, was proud of his children, and enjoyed his grandchildren to the fullest extent. He was consistently present in their lives, caring about them specifically and intentionally. He spent the last several years showing up every day for his grandchildren, just as he always had for Phyllis, Russ and Abby. There was never a doubt that he was in their corner. His actions were a testament to how important they were to him. The legacy he left his family is built from the love, integrity, and service of a man convicted by the call of God to love them as Christ loved him.

A farmer for 50 years, Glen was known to often say he had never worked a day in his life, which is ironic since he was one of the hardest workers most of us have ever known. But farming was never a job for him. He delighted in caring for the land God gave him and using it to provide sustenance for the world around him. He counted it a privilege to bring new life from the ground each harvest season. Glen used what he learned from the work of his hands to direct how he lived every moment. He never grew weary in doing good and because of that, we all routinely reaped the benefits of what he had sown.

Around 1994, God brought Glen and Phyllis to Hopewell Baptist Church. This move changed the course of his life and the life of that church. Glen and Phyllis have served their church faithfully in more ways than we could ever count or measure. Among many other positions through the years, Glen has served as chairman of deacons, chair of the finance committee, and Sunday School Director for as long as anyone can remember. Along with Phyllis, Glen taught a class for young married couples for many years, discipling them with wisdom and compassion. But most of his ministry took place outside of those official roles. Glen understood the value of just being present for people. He knew the worth of making others feel valued, heard, and loved. He led in this space with humility, love, and respect. From the mission fields of Haiti and Honduras to his own back yard in rural south Alabama, he followed the example of Christ by meeting the needs of the people around him.

He was a friend to his community, invaluable in all the ways he changed lives and situations for the better. He was respected for his unwavering commitment to honesty, loyalty and uprightness. He was consistently faithful over a few things and continued to be faithful over much as he was called upon more and more for help by so many throughout his life.

In taking the measure of a man, Glen will be measured by how his small ministries became a large and far reaching testimony of the love of Christ. We struggle to work out how to fill the many spaces he occupied so skillfully. But through our grief, we are comforted knowing that he will continue be with us through all he taught us and we will continue to find him in the places where he ministered to us so lovingly. We will find him on a tractor in his field; at a ballgame cheering for his grandchildren; at doors surrounded by stained-glass windows welcoming young and old with handshakes, hugs, and Starburst candy; in his barn shepherding young men with strength and integrity; in hospital waiting rooms praying over our family members; around a table with a game of Dominoes and good friends; and in all the other places where he showed us that this life is lived well by loving God and loving others. Since Jan. 27, 2025, all who knew him have been remembering how his love and care of us changed our life. We rejoice knowing that on that same day, Glen entered into the full harvest he has sown, pain free and fully healed, and welcomed by a Savior who makes all things new.
