Straughn falls twice at home to Georgiana

Straughn came up on the short end of a home varsity basketball doubleheader against Georgiana on Monday, Dec. 9.

Lady Panthers 46, Lady Tigers 32
Turnovers and missed shots proved to be too much for Straughn (5-2) to overcome as Georgiana (3-4) earned a 46-32 road win in the varsity girls’ game.

Presley Bates got the home scoring started with two free throws. Blakeley Smith followed with a jumper for a 4-0 lead. Lillie Boggan put the Lady Panthers on the board and tied the game at 4-4 with two straight layups. Smith then banked a three-pointer, and Mallory Davis also found the hoop as the Lady Tigers took a 9-6 lead after one.

Boggan began the second period with a three-point play and evened the score at 9-9. Hannah Poston scored a bucket for an 11-9 lead before Georgiana went on a 9-0 run. Avea Feagin had four points, and Grace Bradley capped the surge with a three-pointer for an 18-11 advantage. Straughn battled back with an 8-0 stretch of its own led by Smith’s four points. Davis cut the deficit to one, while Bates had a steal and made a jumper at the buzzer for a 19-18 halftime lead.

Annlee Wise opened the second half with a three-pointer. Boggan scored 14 points in the period followed by Bradley at three. Smith scored six for Straughn, but Georgiana took a 35-28 lead at the end of the third period.

Baida Canant trimmed the gap back to five on a quick layup in the fourth, but the Lady Tigers were unable to draw any closer. Bradley knocked down her third three as the Lady Panthers pulled away. Boggan added six more including a four-of-four showing at the line.

Smith led Straughn with 17 points, while Bates and Davis each added four. Boggan paced Georgiana with 31 points as Bradley tallied nine.

Georgiana 73, Straughn 51
Georgiana (4-0) had a huge second period on both sides of the ball to remain unbeaten that ended up being the difference in a 73-51 win over Straughn (4-7) in the varsity boys’ game.

Clark Jordan started the game with a home basket. Jaden Stallworth then went one-of-two at the line, and Noah Nelson converted a four-point play for a 5-2 lead. Joseph Driver sank a three-pointer and led the Tigers with seven in the opening period. Hunter McBride was next with four, while Clark Gay also hit a bucket. Nelson posted nine and lifted the Panthers to a 16-15 lead after one.

Georgiana broke the game open with 25 points in the second period. Nelson and Nasir Cheatham both had six points, while Stallworth and Quantavious Scott each earned four. Straughn managed only two points by Noah Fowler and trailed 41-17 at the half.

The Tigers returned to form and totaled 22 points in the third period. Jordan led the way with eight as Driver and Fowler both made three-pointers and notched five apiece. Gay went four-of-four at the line. Kaveon Miles chipped in six points for the Panthers who built a 58-39 lead after three.

Jordan continued to spark the Straughn offense with three baskets in the final period. Driver and Fowler each had two, and Ace Carter got in the scoring column with a bucket. Scott garnered five points for Georgiana as Jacobie Morgan buried a three-pointer.

Jordan was the top scorer with 16 points for the Tigers, and Driver also earned a double-digit performance at 14. Nelson led the Panthers with 18 points as Cheatham totaled 16.

The Straughn boys will face Hillcrest-Evergreen in the opening round of the Richard Robertson Christmas Tournament at Andalusia on Thursday, Dec. 12, at 8 p.m. The Straughn girls return to action with a trip to Georgiana on Monday, Dec. 16.
