Pleasant Home settled for a split with Samson as the varsity girls fell short in the first game before the varsity boys ran away in the second game on Friday, Nov. 22.
Lady Tigers 30, Lady Eagles 22
Samson (3-2) overcame a five-point deficit during the third period and rallied past Pleasant Home (2-2) for a 30-22 win in the varsity girls’ game.
Points were few and far between in the first half. Holly Warren gave the Lady Tigers a quick 2-0 lead. Chloe Bush made a free throw for the Lady Eagles and cut the score to 2-1 at the end of the first period.
The offenses warmed up slightly as Bush scored five in the second period. M.J. Wiggins also added a bucket, and Jemma Crocker had four for Samson. The two sides went back and forth until Bush scored a layup and put Pleasant Home in front 8-6 at halftime.
Emma Sormrude gave the Lady Tigers a 9-8 lead early in the third period. However, the Lady Eagles surged back and grabbed a 16-11 lead behind four by Bush and two apiece from Presley Kelley and Emma Anderson. The five-point margin was trimmed back to one at 16-15 at the end of the third.
Samson pulled away with a 15-point showing in the final period led by seven from Crocker. Bush notched four more points with Anderson adding another bucket and Si’Niya Purifoy getting in the scoring column. The visitors’ lead was too much for Pleasant Home to overcome down the stretch.
Bush paced the Lady Eagles with 14 points in the loss. Crocker led the Lady Tigers with 11.
Pleasant Home 74, Samson 16
Pleasant Home (4-0) rode an explosive start and made 13 three-pointers en route to a 74-16 win against Samson (2-4) in the varsity boys’ contest.
The Eagles blitzed right out of the gate with back-to-back opening layups from Jackson Hawkins and Brody Bryan. Hawkins finished the first period with nine followed by John Luke Colvin who had seven. Bryan and J.T. Stockton each had six, while Dillan Purifoy earned four. The Tigers got three from Ben McKenzie and two each by Kelin Hornsby and Brodi Mock. However, the score stood at 32-7 after one.
McKenzie scored all six for Samson in the second period. Colvin drained three more three-pointers as Bryan and Dillan Purifoy grabbed four more. Devontae Purifoy nailed a three just before the break that lifted Pleasant Home to a commanding 52-13 lead at halftime.
With a running clock put into effect in the third, Colvin stayed hot from long range and scored nine more all off three-pointers. The Eagles cooled off some with only 16 points but held the Tigers scoreless for a 68-13 lead at the end of the third period.
Noah Thompson and Hyram Josey each banked a three for Pleasant Home in the final period. Payton Howerton ended the long scoreless drought with a three for Samson, but the game was never in doubt.
Colvin paced the Eagles with 25 points in the win as Bryan and Dillan Purifoy also chipped in double digits with 12 and 10, respectively. McKenzie led the Tigers with nine in the loss.
Both teams head into the Thanksgiving break and resume play after the holiday. Pleasant Home will host Laurel Hill in a girls’ game on Tuesday, Dec. 3 and travel to Red Level for both girls and boys’ action on Friday, Dec. 6.
