Willie P. Mahone, Tech-Sgt. U.S. Army Air Corps is returning from 33 months overseas in the C.B.I. [China, Burma, India] theater of Operations. He will arrive sometime around Oct. 18 at Ft. McPherson, Ga. He will soon visit his family at 211 Barton St. in Andalusia.
Vernon C. Ingram, Tech-Sgt. U.S. Army Air Corps is returning from 33 months overseas in the C.B.I. theater of operations. He will arrive sometime around Oct. 18 at Ft. McPherson, Ga. He will visit his wife, Mrs. Ida Mae Garvin Ingram, at their home in Red Level soon.
Joseph B. Duffel, Sgt. U.S, Army Air Force, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph J. Duffel of River Falls, is serving with the 12th AAF B-26 Marauder Bombing Group in the Mediterranean theater of operations. Sgt. Duffel is a veteran toggle bombardier and has served in the Tunisian, Sicilian, Italian and southern France campaigns.
Arthur Broadus Moss, 2nd Lt., U.S. Marine Corps, has graduated from Reserve Officer’s Class at Quantico, Va. His class is the 53rd class to graduate from the Marine Corps School. He was one of 50 candidates to join the class on May 4, 1944. Lt. Moss attended the University of Alabama prior to enlisting in the Marine Corps on Dec. 2, 1942. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul G. Moss Sr., 709 East Three Notch St., Andalusia.
The family has two other sons serving in the Marine Corps, Capt. Paul G. Moss, Jr. and Corporal Frederick W. Moss. A fourth son, Wade L. Moss, served a year in the Army before being given an honorable discharge because of a physical disability. Paul G. Moss Sr. is an agent for the Central of Georgia Railroad. His wife became the Railroad Clerk when the former clerk, Howard G. Hutto, entered the Army in January last year.
James R. Raley, PFC, U.S. Army, is home on a 21-day furlough after being overseas. He is spending time with his wife and parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Raley of Rt. 4, Andalusia. PFC Raley will return to his duty station at Miami Beach, Fl. when he leaves.
Kyle W., Ward, 2nd Lt., U.S. Army Air Corps, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.O. Ward of Gantt, has reported for duty at the Army Air Forces Training Command, Keesler Field, Biloxi, Miss. He has been stationed at Turner Field, Ga.
Former Local Football Player Now Playing at Randolph Field
Walter O. Merrill, Staff Sgt., U.S. Army Air Corps, former Andalusia High and University of Alabama gridiron ace, is now holding down a tackle berth on the military football team at this unit of the Army Air Forces Training Command, Randolph Field, Texas. Sgt. Merrill is a physical training instructor there. He played three years at Alabama, followed by three seasons with the Brooklyn Dodgers in the National League. He appeared in the 1938 Rose Bowl, the Shriner’s East-West Allstar game of 1940, the Chicago Allstar game in 1940 and last year with the Keesler Field Commandoes.
The big fellow is 27 years old and weighs 220 lbs. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Merrill of Andalusia and is married to the former Mary Jim Hilson. They have a daughter, Marianne.
Author’s note: After the war, Walter Merrill and his family returned to Andalusia and he became a partner with his brother, Henry, in the Andalusia Manufacturing Company. Walter died on March 12, 1953, at the age of 35. He was survived by his mother Mrs. W.C. Merrill; his wife, Mary Jim Hilson Merrill; a daughter, Marianne Merrill; a son, Walter Hilson Merrill; and two brothers, Henry Merrill and Dr. Joe Merrill.
