On Saturday, Nov. 2, beautiful Lake Eufaula was the scene for the Straughn Bass Team’s first tournament of the Alabama Bass Nation High School Tiger Trail.
As professional angler Shane Powell says, “You can catch quality fish on Eufaula; it’s just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. You have to work through a lot of places to find the right fish biting.”
Most anglers south of the Mason-Dixon Line think of Lake Eufaula when they hear the phrase “Bass Fishing Capital of the World.” Even though the largemouth bass population at Eufaula Reservoir has had its ups and downs since the hey days of the 1960s and 1970s, this lake is still considered one of the true gems of the south.
Walter F. George Dam was completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1962, forming the 45,181-acre impoundment on the fertile Chattahoochee River. The reservoir extends from the Walter F. George Dam at Ft. Gaines, Georgia, northward to Phenix City, Alabama. Since this lake is shared by Georgia and Alabama, these states agreed that either a Georgia or an Alabama fishing license could be used when fishing Lake Eufaula.
All seven teams fished on Lake Eufaula three teams weighed in fish. There was a total of 210 boats participating.
In the high school division there was a total of 139 boats.
The team of Austin Alexander/Brooks Clark finished in 52nd with three fish weighing in 4.48 pounds.
The team of Rex Burkett/Kal-El Savage finished 60th with two fish weighing in 3.94 pounds.
The team of Bryson Harrison/Evan Ray finished 67th with two fish weighing in 3.50 pounds.
In the junior division, there was a total of 71 boats.
They will head back to Lake Eufaula for their final tournament with the Wiregrass Student Angler Trail on Saturday, November 15th.
As always the Straughn Bass Team thanks their sponsors, captains, families and community for their support and encouragement. Guests are welcome to come join other family members under our bass team tent to watch the weigh in.
