Mrs. Mary Sue Jernigan, age 80, of Opp, Alabama passed away Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2024, at her home surrounded by her loved ones.
Sue had a servant’s heart, which was made apparent by her years of service with the City of Opp. Sue began her career in 1977 as a secretary and school crossing guard. In 1978, she graduated from the Southeast Police Academy in Dothan, Alabama and became the first female police officer hired by the Opp Police Department. She worked her way up through the ranks and retired after 28 years of service as Captain.
Mrs. Jernigan is survived by her sons & daughters-in-law, Tim Grimes & Joann, Todd Grimes & Sharon, and Kevin Grimes & Mandy; daughter & son-in-law, Donna Moulton & Rick; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rosa & Dock Weeks; along with other numerous family members.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Sue Jernigan will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, from Wyatt Funeral Home Chapel with full honor guard graveside services provided by the Covington County Sheriff’s Office in Peaceful Acres Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Bro. Alan Dieas, Sheriff Blake Turman and Chief Kevin Chance will be officiating with Ricky Moulton, Josh Grimes, Josh Smith, Sam Bass, Ben Baker, Tristan Petrey and Donnie Farris serving as pallbearers. Officers of the Opp Police Department will be serving as honorary pallbearers.
