Our dad, Bobby Hugh Hill, passed away at his home in Montgomery on Friday evening at the age of 90. He is preceded in death by our mom, Martha Merle Stephens Hill, as well as his parents, Elmer O. and Tisie Cook Hill, and 8 brothers and sisters: Jack Hill (Betty), Elmer Lister Hill (Marilyn), Grace Joiner (Cecil), Gladys Posey (Bill), Joe Hill, Billy Hill (Jackie), and Little Bobby Osborn.
Dad was a faithful church deacon for 60 years. He loved and lived his faith! Without question he was the most selfless human being we have ever known in our lives. He was a genuine leader and, in our opinion, one of the greatest men who ever lived. He was also there for both of us, and we will miss the greatest force ever to impact our lives always. Lord knows how we loved that man! He doted on both of his granddaughters and attended everything they were in as long as he was able. He was the best grandaddy to them and always told them how proud he was of them right up until his last breath.
Dad was a great athlete. In 1952 at the conclusion of his senior year, Dad was named All-State Tailback and was offered a football scholarship to the University of Alabama. (He also liked to remind you that they didn’t wear facemasks then.) In the spring of 1953, Dad was offered a professional baseball contract with the Chicago White Sox.
Dad played in Memphis and Meridianville, KY for the Sox before returning home to play in the Alabama-Florida Baseball League for the Andalusia Arrows. He also officiated baseball and football for many years in the Alabama High School Athletic Association.
He served eight years in the U.S. Air Force in the Strategic Air Command (SAC) at posts stateside and two tours overseas.
In the mid-60s he was one of the top amateur bowlers in the region – claiming more than 30 titles.
He was with Orkin Pest Control for 20 years leaving in 1983 as Regional Manager for the Atlanta Region. Dad joined Terminix as Gulf Coast Regional Manager in Mobile in 1983, retiring in 2000. He was a genuine leader and men who worked for him often told us that they learned more from him than from their own fathers. He was that guy.
Hill is survived by his two children, Melodee Hill Robinson and Chip Hill (Robin). He has two granddaughters, Merelee Elizabeth Robinson and Linda Elizabeth Hill.
Hill was born and raised in Covington County spending most of his childhood years in the Stanley community and in Red Level. He graduated from Red Level High School in 1953.
Dad will be laid to rest at Adellum Baptist Church on Saturday, Nov. 2, at noon. We will receive visitation at the church from 11 a.m. to the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Dad’s name to Adellum Baptist Church.
