Reese Burkhardt, a fifth-year senior for the Red Raiders, scored his first collegiate touchdown Saturday on a fake field goal attempt when his team was trailing 14-3 early in the second quarter. But, it was his political statement upon entering the end zone that got many people’s attention.

After crossing into the end zone on a 22-yard run, Burkhardt lifted his jersey to reveal an undershirt with the handwritten message “Trump 24 MAGA.” The touchdown and the message quickly began to spread across social media platforms.

Burkhardt was a 4A First-Team All-State player at Andalusia High School where he was the placekicker and a tight end. He began his collegiate career at UAB before transferring to Texas Tech where he has already earned a degree in University Studies and is now enrolled in post-baccalaureate courses.

As of the end of last season, Burkhardt is averaging 68.1 yards per kickoff attempt as a Red Raider, which was ranked 19th in the FBS at that time.

Texas Tech Head Coach Joey McGuire said Monday that the team has addressed the celebration message with Burkhardt and that the matter would be handled internally, according to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

As for the game, TCU went on to defeat Texas Tech, 35-34.
