BIRMINGHAM BOUND: Straughn qualifies for state volleyball tournament

Andalusia, Opp, Pleasant Home end seasons

One volleyball team in Covington County is still alive after the AHSAA South Super Regional in Montgomery as Straughn punched its ticket to the Class 4A Elite Eight State Championship next week.

The Lady Tigers (28-10) defeated LAMP, 3-0, and Pleasant Grove, 3-0, on Wednesday, Oct. 23, to earn their spot in the state tournament. Straughn fell to Orange Beach, 3-1, in the semi-finals and St. Michael, 3-0, in the consolation match on Thursday, Oct. 24, to finish as the fourth seed from the South.

Straughn will face Alexandria, the first seed from the North Super Regional, on Tuesday, Oct. 29, noon, at the Birmingham Crossplex. The Lady Tigers will make their third state volleyball appearance in school history after qualifying in the 2014 and 2016 seasons.

Other teams competing in 4A are Central-Florence (North third seed), Cherokee County (North fourth seed), Madison County (North second seed), Orange Beach (South second seed), Prattville Christian (South first seed), and St. Michael (South third seed).

Admission to the state tournament is $14 per day. All tickets must be purchased through GoFan.

Three other county teams came up short in their first matches at the South Super Regional.

Opp fell to Prattville Christian, 3-0, on Wednesday and finished the season with a 23-11 record.

Andalusia fell to Trinity, 3-0, on Thursday and finished the season with a 17-9 record.

Pleasant Home fell to Autauga Academy, 3-2, on Thursday and finished the season with a 6-13 record.
