Straughn (4-3, 4-1 4A Region 2) will go for a fourth straight win and recognize its seniors in a region contest against New Brockton (3-5, 2-3) on Friday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m.
This will be the 18th matchup between the two teams dating back to the 1974 season. The Tigers lead the all-time series 10-7 over the Gamecocks.
“New Brockton is a team that is still playing for a spot in the playoffs, so I’m sure they will come ready to play. Their staff does a great job of getting their guys prepared each week. We’ll have to play a disciplined game to have success as they will present some different looks for us both offensively and defensively,” Head Coach Garrett Windham said.
Last week, Straughn earned its second consecutive road victory over Pike County, 24-0. New Brockton was not as fortunate and fell at home to Ashford, 41-0.
“Pike County is a very good football team and is a tough opponent year in and year out. I was extremely proud of our defensive effort because they had so many offensive weapons. Coach (Trae) Bowen did a great job all week of getting our guys prepared to play. Offensively, it was tough early in the game to call plays due to some bad field position, but I thought once that changed, we were able to do some good things,” he said.
Windham added that his offense came out strong with solid rushing and passing performances.
“I was proud of our ground game and was proud to see Tate Watson throw the ball around with success. We still have a lot to improve on, but I’m proud of the improvements we’ve made thus far.”
The Tigers trounced the Gamecocks on the road, 41-12, in 2023.
Senior football players, cheerleaders, and band members will be recognized before kickoff at 6:20 p.m.
