Straughn (2-3, 2-1 4A Region 2) will take the field following a bye week and celebrate homecoming in a critical region contest against Ashford (2-4, 2-1) on Friday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m.
This will be the ninth meeting between the two teams since they first squared off on the gridiron in 2010. The Tigers lead the all-time series 8-0 against the Yellow Jackets.
“Ashford is a very impressive team on film. They have quite a few guys who can run really well and have some big guys on their offensive and defensive lines. They have one of the best, if not the best, player in our region in my opinion that plays both offense and defense,” Head Coach Garrett Windham said. “Coach (David) Stapleton has done a great job with that program, and they’ll be ready to play on Friday night. They’ll give us a couple different looks on offense and get the ball to their playmakers. Defensively, they are sound and play with great effort. We will have to be sharp and execute at a high level Friday night.”
Straughn was off last week but earned a 28-7 road win at Geneva two weeks ago. Ashford fell short to Headland, 21-14.
“I thought we played our most complete game to this point of the season against Geneva. We still need to clean up some of the penalties that stalled our drives offensively, but I thought the effort and execution was the best it’s been. Now, we just have to be able to handle playing well, regroup coming off a bye week, and put the same product on the field versus Ashford that we did two weeks ago,” Windham said.
The Tigers edged the Yellow Jackets on the road last season, 17-13.
The crowning of this year’s homecoming queen and court presentation will be at 6:20 p.m.
