South Alabama Regional Airport was named the Aviation Council of Alabama’s inaugural Alabama Airport of the Year for 2024 at the Auburn University Regional Airport on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

This award is based on outstanding efforts in the areas of airport management, serving the public, maintaining facilities, landscaping and grass maintenance, economic development, fuel sales, audit and financial reports, and marketing.

“This award is for all of Covington County. Many years ago, we had a dream to provide our community with a successful airport, assist in job creation, and be a driving force in our community. Today, that reality is recognized by our peers all across our state,” SARA Executive Director Jed Blackwell said.

SARA graded out with an outstanding overall evaluation from inspections and reviews from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) Aeronautics Bureau. In addition to being the Alabama Airport of the Year, SARA is nominated for the FAA Southeast Region Airport of the Year.

“From our board members, supporting entities Covington County Commission, City of Andalusia, and City of Opp partners and staff, this award is a reflection of your hard work. We couldn’t be more proud of you,” Blackwell added.

South Alabama Regional Airport is located at 21861 Bill Benton Lane in the Sanford community. For more information visit flysara.org or call 334-222-6598.
