Wheelchairs can be dropped off at First Baptist-Andalusia

Anyone with a wheelchair that is not being used may donate that wheelchair, walker, crutches, or cane to the Joni and Friends Ministry and help a disabled person with the gift of mobility.

Joni Eareckson Tada, a paraplegic because of a diving accident she suffered as a teenager in 1967, is confined to a wheelchair. Her ministry, Joni and Friends/Wheels for the World, is dedicated to extending the love and message of Jesus Christ to people who are affected by a disability around the world.

It is one thing to endure life with a disability here in the United States, but it’s quite another when one has a disability in a lesser-resourced country with no hope of securing the mobility equipment they desperately need. That is the reason the donated wheelchairs, walkers, footrests, crutches, and canes are restored like new and delivered to children and adults with disability in these countries. Many times these disabled people, cannot afford a wheelchair or even have access to securing one.

The gospel message will also be shared at the time the wheelchair is fitted to the recipient by a PT, OT, and a wheelchair mechanic. At the time of counseling, each recipient is also given a Bible in their native language.

The drop-off site for Covington County is the First Baptist Church of Andalusia during the month of October. The donated equipment will then be transported to Montgomery for transport to the restoration center. For more information, please contact Duane or Brenda Mooney at 334-343-8825. If you are not able to drop off your used equipment, arrangements will be made to pick it up.

Joni and Friends/Wheels for the World also provides a tax-deductible receipt for each wheelchair donation. More information is available at joniandfriends.org/chair-corps.
