Four stand-out athletes and alumni of Andalusia High School will be inducted into the school’s Football Hall of Fame today.
An official induction ceremony honoring John Henry Daniels, Waverly “Boot” Flowers, Leon Hattaway, and David Moore will be held at the City Hall auditorium Friday, Sept. 13, following a homecoming parade that is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
Following is information about this year’s inductees.
John Henry Daniels
John Henry Daniels, known as “Big John,” played for the Ralph J. Bunche Wildcats football team from 1958 to 1960 as a defensive end, offensive end, and middle guard, leading them to winning seasons, including an undefeated season in 1960. He valued his time there, learning valuable lessons on and off the field from Principal C.C. Baker and Coach J.C. Hall, who provided guidance akin to father figures alongside his parents and community.
Daniels embraced the school’s motto, “Make Sure You’re Right, Then Go Ahead,” instilling the same values in his five sons and three daughters, fostering a legacy of respect, loyalty, and community stewardship.
For 30 years, Big John exemplified hard work as a construction engineer with the Alabama Department of Transportation while also running a lawn service and solving problems for family and friends. His legendary feats were so remarkable that tales of him lifting a boat have become folklore, solidifying his status as a modern-day “John Henry.”
