Volunteers at Carver Community Center of Florala packaged 2,530 pairs of undies, seven to a package, for children returning to school.
The undies were distributed at the citywide “Back to School Bash” spearheaded by Cancer Freeze. The garments were obtained from “Undies for Everyone,” a charitable organization that secures, warehouses, and distributes undies for school age children. Carver paid a fee of $1,500 to Undies for Everyone to help cover their operating cost which equates to less than 60 cents per pair. Betty Strickland is Carver’s Project Manager for Undies.
Carver also distributed toothbrushes kits and toiletry kits along with the undies.
The Carver Community Center of Florala is a 501c3 organization that serves Florala, Lockhart and Flowersview, Florida. Carver is sustained by donations from the public, grants, and volunteers.
Other programs at Carver include Senior Saturday, which provides meals to seniors and the home-bound on the first Saturday of each month. Judy Burton is the project leader.
Adults gather to play cards, listen to music, and socialize on Fun Friday, the third Friday of each month. Jean Cooper Stone heads this event.
The Amazing Beautiful Children’s Club meets most Sundays of each month except for the month of July and is led by Fontella Thompson and Hazel Bryant. Dance classes offered by Minster Frank Jones are also on Sundays.
Hazel Bryant, the center’s president, said everyone is welcome to participate in Carver activities and events. Donations may be made as memberships or general.
Contact Bryant at 334-328-8952 by phone or text for further information.
