Matt Brunson recently announced on Tuesday he was stepping down as the head football coach at Opp High School.

In addition to his duties as head football coach, Brunson also served as the school’s athletic director and a physical education teacher.

“Opp is a special place with great kids and unbelievable community support. I wish Opp High School nothing but success moving forward,” Brunson said.

He will return to his alma mater Baker High School in Florida, where he coached for 11 years prior to his arrival at Opp in December 2022. The Bobcats finished the 2023 season with a 4-7 record and qualified as the fourth seed in 3A Region 2.

Before he came to Opp, Brunson coached at Vernon High School, Crestview High School, and Baker High School over a 25-year span in Florida. He averaged nine wins a year and was named the Florida High School Athletic Association’s Coach of the Year four times. His career record following the 2023 season stands at 217-80.

A graduate of Baker, Brunson was a four-year letter winner at Troy University from 1987 to 1991 and a three-year starter as a nose guard. He earned All-Gulf South Conference honors while at Troy and played on the Trojans’ 1987 national championship team.

The Bobcats have begun summer workouts in preparation with fall practices scheduled to start in early August. Opp is scheduled to host Brantley in a preseason game on August 23 and begin the 2024 season at home against Northview of Florida on August 30.
