Three local races were decided in a runoff election on Tuesday. All three of the elections determined in the runoff were on the Republican ballot.

For County Commission Dist. 2, Robbie Weaver earned 75 percent of the vote, defeating Steven King who finished with 25 percent. The Dist. 2 seat was opened when the current commissioner for that district, Michael Smith, successfully ran for the commission chairman seat, winning in last month’s primary.

“I thank everyone who came out and voted, all of those who have worked for me over the past few months. I want to thank Steven King. We had a good, clean race and he is an outstanding guy,” Weaver said.

Weaver will face independent candidate Shane Gay in the November general election.

Dist. 3 County Commissioner Lynne Holmes held off challenger Jimmy Grissett. Holmes earned 58 percent of the vote to Grissett’s 42 percent.

“I want to thank everyone who came out today and voted. I especially want to thank those who have helped me, worked for me and prayed for me and been beside me through all of this. There’s no words to describe the gratefulness that I feel,” Holmes said.

Holmes will be sworn in following the November general election.

The final race on the runoff ballot was for Place 2 on the Covington County Board of Education. In that race, Jed Blackwell came away with the victory, defeating incumbent Jimmy Rodgers. Blackwell finished with 52 percent to Rodgers’ 48 percent.

“I’m so honored to be elected to represent the people of Covington County on the board of education,” Blackwell said. “I thank God for this opportunity, my family who have supported me throughout this process, and my late parents. This is about the children of Covington County, their future, and giving them every opportunity to be successful.”

Blackwell will be sworn in as a school board member on Jan. 1, 2025.

The total number of ballots cast in the runoff was 2,779. Provisional ballots will be counted on Tuesday, April 23, at noon.
