Betty Bass Wood, born in Covington County on Jan. 13, 1933, was one of 10 children of the Stacy and Aline Bass family and the last direct descendant to pass away. Betty worked as a telephone operator in Montgomery before meeting her husband, Gerald “Son” Wood, and marrying in 1953. She was a member of the Military Wives Club in Montgomery and later worked as a teachers’ aide and substitute teacher in Georgia. At the time of Son’s retirement in 1984, they moved to Millboro, Virginia, where they lived for almost 40 years. There, she was a member of Horeb Baptist Church, and enjoyed singing in the choir. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Son, in 2017, and continued to live in the home he built until January 2024 when she moved to an assisted living home in Fayetteville, Georgia, near most of her children.
