The Andalusia Lady Bulldogs secured a victory in its first area matchup of the season, claiming a 6-3 win over Geneva Thursday night.
Andalusia pitcher Kailey Jackson kept Geneva batters quiet for the most part, giving up one earned run on four hits. She struck out a total of 12 Lady Panthers.
Jackson was also in on the first run of the game. After reaching base on a Geneva fielding error, she stole second and then scored on a triple by McKenzie Barrow, as Andalusia took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Jackson returned to the mound and struck out the side in the top of the second.
Andalusia’s bats got hot in the bottom of the second, beginning with a lead-off single by Sarah Katherine Reese, who stole second before being switched with pinch runner Kionni Wright. Jessa Ann Dubose then singled to centerfield, putting runners at the corners for the Lady Bulldogs. The bases were loaded after Emily Ruth earned a walk. An infield single by Blakelyn Bass brought Wright home which was followed by a single from Olivia Cravey, scoring Dubose. The Lady Bulldogs continued the streak when Taya Newton singled singled to right field, bringing home Ruth, making the score 4-0. With one out, Barrow earned a walk that forced home Bass. When the dust settled on the second, Andalusia held a 5-0 lead.
Geneva went down in order in the top of the third while the Lady Bulldogs left two stranded in their half of the inning.
The Lady Panthers broke through in the top of the fifth as Aubree Lamb led off with a single and then advanced to third on an error and then to third on a fielder’s choice. Lamb scored on a fielding error that also allowed the batter, Erika Torres, to advance to second base. A single by Isabelle Padgett brought Torres home as Geneva cut Andalusia’s lead to 5-2 after five innings.
Geneva would get within striking distance with another run in the top of the sixth as Kiersten Lewis led off with a single and ultimately scored on a wild pitch, making the score 5-3.
Andalusia got that run back in their half of the inning, courtesy of Newton who slapped a triple to right field and proceded home on a mishandled throw to third.
Down 6-3, Geneva batters were not able to get anything going in the top of the seventh as Jackson struck out the side to end the contest.
Leading the offense for the Lady Bulldogs was Newton who went 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored. Barrow went 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBI, also earning a walk. Cravey and Bass each recorded one RBI. Bass and Madi Everette recorded stolen bases for AHS.
The Lady Bulldogs are 3-1 overall and 1-0 in area play. The team travels to Dothan on Tuesday, March 12 to face another area opponent in Houston Academy before traveling to Slocomb for another area contest on Thursday, March 14.
