Red Level roars to pair of road basketball wins at Opp

Red Level earned a road sweep in a pair of varsity basketball games at Opp on Monday, Dec. 11.

Five different players scored as Red Level picked up a 44-36 win over Opp in the varsity girls’ contest.
Both teams started the game strong as the action remained close in the opening period. Mariah Crowell made a basket and went three-of-four at the line for the Lady Tigers. Amaya Williams and Ke’Mariah Crittenden also contributed buckets. Jalisa Smith and Cuba Wiggins each earned three points and helped the Lady Bobcats take a 10-9 lead after one.
Crowell added five more points in the second, while Crittenden had four. Miracle Wright also found the hoop in the frame. Smith notched three points for Opp and was followed by Samaria Womack and Tykyra Crittenden who each had a field goal. Red Level took a 20-18 halftime lead.
The offenses continued to work after the break and combined for 26 points in the third. T. Crittenden knocked down a pair of threes as Wiggins managed the other five points for the Lady Bobcats. Crowell scored six points off two buckets and a pair of foul shots. Elizabeth Carroll and K. Crittenden both tallied four points for the Lady Tigers who maintained a 35-29 lead with eight minutes to go.
Williams blistered the net from long range twice in the fourth and led all scorers. Smith made two baskets, but Red Level held on for its second eight-point win over Opp this season.
Crowell led the Lady Tigers (3-2) with 19 points, and K. Crittenden also contributed double digits at 10. Williams finished the game with nine points.
Wiggins paced the Lady Bobcats (0-7) with 12 points and was followed by Smith who had 10. T. Crittenden garnered eight points in the loss.

Red Level led from start to finish and cruised to a 74-45 win against Opp in the varsity boys’ matchup.
Javen Poindexter knocked down three shots beyond the arc and had 11 points in the first. Jamari Brown also had a three-pointer and scored five for the Tigers who built a 16-3 lead. Alan Jones had a basket for the Bobcats, while Josh Smith went one-of-two from the line.
The visitors remained hot on offense with another big period in the second. Brown chipped in two more three-pointers and was followed by Poindexter at five. Dominic Williams Jr. made two baskets, and Justin Patterson also added a bucket. Smith had four points for Opp as DJ Hines buried a three, but Red Level took a 33-16 lead at halftime.
The offenses lit up the scoreboard with 21 points each in the third. Poindexter was on fire with 17 points as Patterson picked up a pair of buckets. Smith had eight points and converted four free throws in the frame for Opp. Jaymaryon Allen and Hines managed four points each, but Red Level upped its lead to 52-37 after three.
Junior Mayes and Ben Carroll sparked the Tigers off the bench with six points apiece in the fourth. Poindexter had four as Williams and Patterson both chipped in a bucket. Smith had a three for the Bobcats who also received two by William Boyd and Allen.
Poindexter was the top scorer for Red Level (4-2) with 37 points. Brown and Patterson followed with 11 and eight, respectively. Williams, Mayes, and Carroll all had six points in the win.
Smith paced Opp (1-6) with 16 points in the loss. Hines had nine, and Jones scored five.
