The Lower Alabama Community Choir will hold a Christmas concert on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 7 p.m., at the LBW Dixon Center for the Performing Arts.

The choir is under the direction of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church rector Eric Mancil and accompanied by LBW professor Dr. Steve Hubbard. There are currently 46 members who make up the choir.

“One of the beautiful things about our group is that it’s made up of people from all walks of life with different experiences and backgrounds. We have singers of all ages, ranging from junior high students to senior adults. We have singers who sing in their own church choirs from different denominations. We have singers who have never sung in a choir before and singers who have sung their whole lives,” Mancil said.

This year’s theme is “Sounds of the Season: A Christmas Concert.” The concert will feature both sacred and secular choral selections such as ‘O Holy Night,’ ‘Mary, Did You Know?’, ‘Sleigh Ride,’ and ‘Let There Be Peace on Earth.’

“Admission will be free and is a gift from our choir to the community in celebration of the holiday season,” he added.

Founded in August this year, the LACC features singers from Andalusia and the surrounding communities. The choir has been rehearsing weekly since mid-August to prepare for the concert.

The choir has had two performances leading up to its Christmas concert. The first was at the Covington Veterans Foundation’s “Celebration of Heroes: A Salute to Covington County Veterans” on Sunday, Nov. 5, at Andalusia High School. The second was at LBW’s “A Blue Christmas” and tree lighting on Tuesday, Nov. 28.

Following the Christmas concert, the choir will perform at Candyland on Saturday, Dec. 16.

Mancil said that anyone with a passion for music and singing is welcome to join the choir. No prior music knowledge or experience is required. The Lower Alabama Arts Coalition sponsors the choir with support from LBW Community College.

“What draws us together is not our differences but our shared love of music and singing together. We invite the community to come out and join us for a fun night celebrating the season,” Mancil said.
