The Andalusia Area Chamber of Commerce presented Wyatt Sasser Construction with its top prize and a live peace lily for April’s Clean and Green Initiative on Tuesday, May 2.
The program was coordinated as part of the Clean Up Covington County Litter Round Up.
“We chose to participate in this year’s Clean and Green Initiative because we are always looking for ways to be more involved in the community and to help out. This was the perfect way to do that and help the planet. Receiving the Trash Collect of the Year award is a real honor to us,” Administrative Assistant Bekah Harrelson said.
According to Harrelson, the staff collected 11 total bags of litter.
“To be honest, we were shocked that we won because 11 bags seemed like a small number. We hope to greatly increase that number next year. It is important to keep the planet litter-free because it is our home and full of resources that we need to take care of. Keeping it litter-free is really just a small part of that, she said.”
The peace lily they won will be placed in the front foyer for the staff and guests to enjoy.
Harrelson stated that WSC took a different approach to the competition this year.
“We actually made it more of a competition around here that I called the WSC Litter Getter Olympics. Our vice president Calvin Sasser issued a challenge that the top three contributors would win cash prizes. First place was given $300 followed by $200 for second place and $100 for third place. That was a pretty good motivator. Calvin was the first-place winner with Levi Sasser in second and Cristin Murphy in third. Our goal is for participation to increase each year,” she said.
