The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4388 in Red Level presented a cash award to Sadie Burks for her participation and selection as the Voice of Democracy Post winner.
“The Voice of Democracy is a recorded oral presentation of the themed thesis and is judged by a panel. This win positioned Burks to participate at the next level with additional scholarship fund awards. Each level of competition awards the winner even greater scholarship awards up to the national level with a possible $30,000 scholarship,” a VFW press release stated.
Burks will graduate from Opp High School on Thursday, May 26.
“Her entrance demonstrated her commitment to national patriotism, military history, and community pride. Her conduct is worthy of emulation and should be presented throughout the community schools as an example of her civic pride and what is available to these young students. She won on the Voice of Democracy levels from ninth through 12th grade. However, there is also the Patriots Pen for students from 6th through 8th grades. Participants’ presentations compete for cash awards at each level with independent panels judging,” said VFW Post 4388 Quartermaster Kelly Baldwin.
