In their own words, Andalusia High School students are “pumped” and “stoked” about the recent success of their basketball teams.

The varsity girls and boys advanced to the state tournament Saturday by winning the South Regional tournament in Troy. Each team will face Anniston in the state’s Class 4A semifinals tomorrow at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Complex. The girls tip off at noon and the boys hit the court at 1:30 p.m.

“I’m definitely planning to go,” AHS junior John Tillman said. “I’m pumped up and stoked. I’ve been to almost every home game this year and I think we’re going to win (state).”

To save money, some students are carpooling, like junior Lauren Powell.

“We’re going up with a bunch of friends and enthusiastic fans,” she said. “I’m pumped because Andalusia basketball is back on the map. We’re coming home with the blue (state championship trophies).”

Andrew Johnson, father of AHS senior boys player Nico Johnson, is organizing a charter bus trip to Birmingham.

The bus will leave the school tomorrow at 7 a.m. and a ticket for the bus costs $25 — this price does not include the cost of the game ticket. There are 45 open spaces on the bus, but there will also be a reserve bus available if the first bus fills up. For more information, call Johnson at 488-7397.

AHS principal Dr. Daniel Shakespeare said students will be excused from school to attend the games in Birmingham.

“Our kids are very excited for this opportunity,” he said.
