The Full Tummy Project of Covington County is a non-profit weekend backpack program that offers a free supply of nutritious meals and snacks for children in grades K through 6, who may be at risk for hunger on the weekends or during school holidays.

Local elementary schools served are Andalusia, Straughn, Red Level, Pleasant Home, Opp, Fleeta, and WS Harlan.

The recipients are identified by teachers and counselors and remain confidential.  Bags are discreetly delivered and distributed each Friday before the end of the day during the school year. Currently, Full Tummy is serving approximately 300 children per week during the school year.

The FTP is a 501(c) 3 organization founded in 2014. All donations are tax-deductible.  The project is run by volunteers and funded by local businesses, individuals, and occasional grants like the State Farm grant that has just been applied for. All food is new, brand name, and purchased from two local companies.

Full Tummy has two fundraisers coming this fall.

The Covington County Sheriff’s Posse is sponsoring a large equipment auction at Hilltop Saturday, Oct. 16. The event will not only benefit the Full Tummy Project but also Cancer Freeze, Meredith’s Miracles, and the Bethesda House. Full Tummy will host its annual Charity Golf Classic at the Andalusia Country Club on Tuesday, Oct. 19. Team registrations are currently being accepted for a 4-person scramble at $500 per team. The start time will be at 1 p.m. after lunch has been served. Full Tummy is also seeking event sponsors and hole sponsorships at $100 per hole.
