Fire destroys home

An Andalusia man lost his residence in a fire Monday, but was not inside the residence when the blaze occurred.
The fire occurred at a mobile home on Green County Lane, behind Hilltop Meats on Hwy. 29, just south of Gantt. The home, which belonged to 30-year-old Michael Grissett, was heavily damaged. Neither Grissett — who lives alone — nor any other persons were injured in the fire.
“When we got on scene, the back end of the home was fully involved in the fire,” said Bill Stanley, training officer for Gantt Volunteer Fire Department. “We made an offensive attempt to keep the fire contained in the back end and were successful in doing so.”
Emergency response personnel, including the Gantt VFD and Heath Volunteer Fire Department, first responded at approximately 12:45 p.m. Monday and spent more than two hours before extinguishing the blaze. Advanced EMS and Covington County Sheriff’s Office deputies also responded to the scene.
“There is smoke damage throughout the trailer,” Stanley said, before confirming that it appears to be a “total loss.” Stanley said it is unclear what caused the fire.
“We had great assistance from Heath and a quick response from EMS, who thankfully was not needed,” he said.
Grissett and members of his family chose not to comment.
