Brooke Greathouse, MSN, is Andalusia Health’s 2020 Mercy Award winner.

The Mercy Award is the highest honor bestowed upon LifePoint Health employees and is awarded to people who demonstrate a caring spirit and reflect the values of the LifePoint company.

Greathouse became a nurse four years ago.

“I have been a nurse since February 1 of 2016. That was my first day. I passed my boards and they had me come in that exact same day to start working,” Greathouse said.

When Greathouse first started college, she was unsure of where her path would lead.

“Honestly, whenever I actually started out at LBW, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I just knew it was going to be something in the healthcare field,” Greathouse said. “My grandmother was a nurse, and so my mother persuaded me to also become one. I’m glad she pushed me because I definitely do enjoy it.”

Greathouse was honored to be nominated by a coworker for the 2020 Mercy Award.

“Brooke is our Employee Health Nurse and she is just the best,” HR generalist Jennifer Trahan said. “She always has a smile on her face and speaks to everyone she meets. She calls everyone by name and I have never known her to not come help if ever asked. She always has a positive attitude and never says anything derogatory. I remember when I was first hired I worked in patient access and Brooke was so sweet and friendly. She had only seen me in person twice but every time she walked past me she would say ‘Hey Jennifer! How are you doing? Need anything or have any questions?’ She was the first person, outside of my department, that made me feel welcome and part of the team and has never stopped. She is just the best and definitely helps create a place where ‘employees want to work.’”

Greathouse said she was surprised to get the award.

“Right off the bat, I was surprised. Then I was very grateful because you have to be nominated by someone who works with you,” Greathouse said. “So, I was grateful when someone nominated me for it.”

Although Greathouse has only been at Andalusia Health for a few years, she feels that she has experienced a lifetime of memories with her coworkers and patients.

“If I can think of how this has helped me grow, it’s going to be every coworker that I’ve had because they have pretty much always been there. Everyone is awesome to work with and they really helped me learn while I was here and I’ve grown as a nurse because of that and the patients I got to take care of in my time here,” Greathouse said. “My favorite memories involve them. There are definitely some patients that change your outlook on life and give you a different perspective that makes you understand things that you maybe haven’t experienced yourself.”
