Mary Wise Hughes
Our loving mother and angel Mary Wise Hughes, 93, passed on to be forever with the Lord Jesus, on May 22, 2019, at her home on Gantt Lake, Alabama.
There will be a memorial held at a later date.
Mary was born on August 12th, 1925, in Elba, Ala., to Johnny Cleveland Wise and Bonnie Onita Wise. The Wise family is known for establishing the Wise Mill Assembly of God Church. Johnny built this church for Bonnie and was home to Mary and her 9 siblings-John B. Wise, Lillian Ruth Boswell, Joseph Monroe Wise, Charles William Wise, Jack Cleveland Wise, Paul Revere Wise, Harold Loyd Wise, Welcome Jimmy Wise, Gappa Thomas Wise. Every Sunday you could find Mary there in the church playing the piano and singing praises to Jesus.
Mary wed the love of her life, Joseph Tisdale Hughes and after living in the Wise Mill Church Community in Elba, they moved to Gantt Lake in Andalusia, Alabama. Mary was the Godliest woman and was a strong and gracious wife and mother. Her dedication to her family was unquestionable. Where you found Mary you would find Joe and vice versa. Adding to this commitment was evident in her adventurous life with Joe. You could regularly find Mary fishing, deer hunting, camping, riding horses. She loved to share her beautiful flowers with her family and friends so they could enjoy them as much as she did. Mary and Joe enjoyed going to their cabin in the North Carolina Mountains where they never tired of the beautiful views and friends they met there.
Mary worked as a secretary at Alatex and later at Alabama Electric where she retired.
Mary is survived by her husband of 73 years, Joe; 7 children, Elaine H. Scofield; Janice H. Brooks; Dwan Hughes; Jeannie H. Watson; Alice B. Henderson; Marilyn H. Brooks and Debbie C. Stuckey, 14 Grandchildren, 17 Great Grandchildren; and 3 Great Great Grandchildren.
Mother had a heart of heavenly sweetness and was an angel on earth in our lives and for everyone that knew her.
In memory of you, Mother:
Go rest high on that mountain
Mom, your work on earth is done
Go to heaven a shoutin’
Love for the Father and the Son
Oh, how we cried the day you left us
We gathered round your grave to grieve
I wish I could see the angels faces
When they hear your sweet voice sing
