The Covington County Elite travel basketball team showed up and showed out as they captured the Stars and Stripes tournament championship Saturday in Foley.

C.C. Elite opened up the pool play portion of the tournament against the BCF Warriors with a 44-26 win.

The Elite stayed strong in the second game of the day with a 64-40 win over PCBC.

“In pool play, we just tried to get in a rhythm,” C.C. Elite head coach Niguel Jones said. “We just wanted to feel the teams out and play our pace of basketball.”

In bracket play, the Elite opened up strong with a 43-29 win over Triple Threat.

“The guys came into the game ready,” Jones said. “We played well, played together and played hard for the win.”

The win over Triple Threat put the Elite into the championship game.

In the championship, the Elite would face off with Monroe County’s T.J. Wiggins and the PC All-Stars.

The Elite stopped Wiggins and held on for a 34-31 win.

“It wasn’t a great game,” Jones said. “We couldn’t find the shooting end of the game. Our shots just weren’t falling like they usually do, but we preach defense all the time and we did just that. We contained a great ball player in T.J. Wiggins and made sure their other guys didn’t make impact plays. I’m so proud of how these guys played this weekend. We had a few new guys that played with us this weekend and I was amazed at how well we played together as a team. With this tournament championship, we have captured our third championship and third set of rings. These guys have represented well and have become a true team. I’m proud of these guys. We are now preparing for nationals. We want to make a major impact for our community by bring that championship home.”
