A Red Level man who eluded local law enforcement officers in a vehicle, crashed, fled on foot, and was tracked by a K9 unit and a helicopter unit Monday afternoon.

Officer Johnathan Pitts of the Andalusia Police Department responded to a suspicious person call to the storage buildings on Montgomery Street. When the officer arrived, the man fled in a vehicle through several side streets to Lindsey Bridge Road, where he headed south at a high rate of speed, according to a release from the APD. Pitts pursued the vehicle onto Head Farm Road south of Andalusia, where the driver wrecked, and fled on foot.

APD officers, Covington County Sheriff’s deputies, the Covington County Posse K-9 tracking team, and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, which responded with a helicopter to aid in the search, combed the area. The man, identified as Kenneth Lamar Douglas, 43, of Red Level, was taken into custody nearly two hours later.

Douglas was charged with attempting to elude law enforcement and reckless endangerment, as well as several traffic violations. He is being held on a $2,000 bond.

Andalusia Police chief Paul Hudson expressed his appreciation to the Covington County Sheriff’s Department, the Covington County Sheriff’s Posse, and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency for their assistance in apprehending Douglas.
