Revenue Commission will advertise delinquent parcels April 6

Covington County property owners who have not yet paid their 2018 taxes have just a few more days to pay before additional interest is assessed and delinquent notices are published.

To date, the Covington County Revenue Commission office has collected 97.9 percent of property taxes due.

The office started with $12,259,512.26 due, and has collected $12,012,271.23, leaving $247,241.03 due.

“We have had a good tax collection year so far,” Patterson said. “I have to thank my staff for being exceptional this year. We just encourage people to come out and pay their taxes.”

Each month that a property owner does not pay his or her property taxes, the interest goes up. Beginning Sat., April 6, the names of people who have not paid will be advertised in The Star-News.

On March 1, the interest went up to a 4 percent interest charge and a $20 fee per parcel. On April 1, the interest due will increase to 5 percent. Property owners also will be charged an advertising fee of approximately $45 per parcel.

Patterson said that the office is legally required to publish the the names for three consecutive weeks – on April 6, 13 and 20 – before he holds an auction for property on which taxes are owed. The sale is set for 10 a.m. on March 20.

After March 31, the revenue commission office will stop taking personal checks.

Patterson also said that if any businesses have yet to pay their business personal property taxes, they also need to get into the office.

“We would really like to encourage anyone that owns a business in Covington County that they need to come in and pay their business personal property taxes,” Patterson said. “You will have until really May 22 to the end of June where we will be really concentrating on getting those business personal property taxes in.”

Patterson said that if there is anything anybody needs, they are able to call the revenue commission office.

Payments may also be made by mail or in person. To pay online or pay by credit card in the office, there will be a 2.35 percent processing fee.

The office is open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
