Shooting fireworks is a New Year’s Eve tradition, and there are several area firework shops that have opened for the sesason.
The Fuse, located on 14519 Cottonwood Drive, headed to Florala, is a new up and coming firework shop.
Owner Terry Craig said that he is selling a lot of artillery shells, fountains and bottle rockets for the coming holiday.
“We are getting a lot of business coming into the holiday,” Craig said.
The artillery shells are from $62 to $8, the fountains range from $8 to $15 and the bottle rockets range from $1.99 to $7.99.
“Setting off fireworks during New Year’s is a time to enjoy with all of the family,” Craig said. “It is just the American way.”
Craig said that the most important thing is to make sure an adult is around.
“That is the number one rule, make sure there are adults around,” Craig said. “And make sure there is no alcohol around when you shoot them off as well.”
The Fuse will be open daily from 3 p.m., until people stop coming in the door.
PowderKeg! Fireworks, located on Hwy. 29, headed to Straughn is open every day during the holiday season.
Jordan Theus from PowderKeg! Fireworks said that business hasn’t picked up yet.
“We haven’t really been seeing a lot of people come in yet,” Theus said. “But we are hoping that will change once the holiday comes around.”
Theus said that people have been buying a mixture of things in the shop.
“It is just tradition that people set off fireworks during New Year’s,” Theus said. “People just need to make sure that the fireworks are put out properly. Just follow the instructions and they should be good.”
PowderKeg! Fireworks is open Monday through Friday from noon until 10 p.m., Sundays from 2 p.m., until 10, and on New Year’s Eve from 10 a.m., until midnight.
K and V Fireworks agrees that setting off fireworks is all about tradition on New Year’s Eve.
“It has just always been done that way,” Megan Cook said. “It is a great way to ring in the New Year.”
She said that people have been buying the big fireworks that they can light quickly.
“Usually those cost between $20 to $60,” Cook said. “Just always be cautious when using fireworks and you should have a great time.”
K and V Fireworks will be open Saturday from 10 a.m., until 10 p.m., Sunday from 9 a.m., until 10 p.m., and New Year’s Eve from 8 a.m., until midnight and is located at 13901 U.S. Hwy., 84.
Angie Hughes from Andy’s Fireworks, located at 23639 Alabama Highway 55, said that fireworks are fun and pretty.
She said that the loadable fireworks are the most popular items in their store. They range from $70 to $98.
“If you are going to shoot fire works you need to be safe,” Hughes said. “You need to stay at a safe distance, have adult supervision, follow instructions, never point or throw the fireworks and use outdoors only.”
Andy’s Fireworks is open everyday from 2 p.m., until 10 p.m. On New Year’s Eve they will be open from 10 a.m., until people stop coming in the store.
